The Best Sci Fi Can Inspire Us

Although many may disagree, I think that the best sci fi can affect us in ways that are beneficial to all of society. Sometimes, it can even guide our thinking, helping us to new levels of creativity that we might otherwise not have achieved.

Main stream literature can inspire as well, but it usually only deals with the standard tropes of life, death, and how we deal with them. It is often so concerned with realism that it neglects imagination.

The best sci fi, however, can enlarge our perceptions and help us follow new avenues of thought. It can help us imagine what an artificial intelligence might be like. Or a species from another planet. In doing so, it also helps us look at ourselves in new ways.

It can also inspire invention. For example, the modern satellite system was first described in a story by Arthur C. Clarke. It’s very possible that his tale helped others realize the practical uses of this idea.

The more traditional story doesn’t do as good a job as science fiction does when it comes to studying what it means to be human. It is more limited by conventions, so can’t be very speculative.

Writing that describes non existent worlds, or alien species in a convincing way, requires a great deal of talent. Therefore, it should be taken as seriously as any other form of literature, and appreciated for what it is.

Many people avoid non realistic stories. This is a mistake, and they need to remember that all tales are ultimately the creation of an author’s imagination.

The point of all fiction, no matter what genre, is to convince readers that an imagined world or series of events is real. It makes no sense to shun stories that don’t take place in the actual world, because all stories are essentially “made up.”

Therefore, all fiction is an attempt to escape from reality. The really good authors also help us learn something about ourselves or the world around us, and they can do this no matter what genre they are working in.

The beneficial influence that the best sci fi has had on its readers should not be overlooked. It deserves to receive as much attention as more conventional literature.
