November 18th, 2008 by vanessa

Street Kid: A Creative Non-Fiction Story Street Kid is the Hugh Atwell story. Compelled to leave home at age ten, Hugh hid on the streets of Kentville, Nova Scotia, slept in a cardboard box, and sold bottles to buy food. His mother died when Hugh was five, but he felt her nearness in time of trouble. Hugh enlisted in the army at age fifteen. He splurged his first paycheck in Kentville and met the love of his life, Leona McDow. He went AWOL on his sixteenth birthday, received a jail sentence in Windsor, Nova Scotia, and a detention at his military base. The experience made a man of him. Hugh served his country for thirty years as a soldier and another fifteen years as a professional in the fields of trade and health. Since his retirement in 1985, Hugh polished his golfing skills. His trophies and war medals witness a full and vibrant life.
